  4. Stay off the roof, especially when it’s wet or windy.

  • A written quote that lists materials, scaffolding and waste removal.
  • What guarantee comes with the work.
  • For larger jobs, membership of a trade body such as the NFRC, or a competent person scheme such as CompetentRoofer.

Be wary of cold callers. For example, someone may knock on your door, say they’ve spotted a problem with your roof and ask for payment up front.

Permissions and building regulations

Like-for-like repairs usually don’t need planning permission. However, check with your council first if you’re in a conservation area or a listed building. Replacing more than a quarter of a roof’s covering may also need to meet current insulation standards under the Building Regulations.
