  1. Check every way in, and whether someone else has a spare key.
  2. Call 999 if a child or vulnerable person is locked inside, or something is cooking.
  3. Have proof you live there ready, such as photo ID with your address.
  4. Ask for the full price before any work starts.

Choosing locksmith services: what to check

  • Membership of the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) or another vetting scheme. There’s no legal licence for locksmiths in the UK, so this matters.
  • Public liability insurance.
  • A full price up front, covering call-out, labour and parts.
  • That they ask for proof you live at the property.

Lock standards in brief

Many home insurance policies ask for a BS3621 lock on final exit doors. On uPVC and composite doors, insurers often look for a TS007 3 star or SS312 Diamond cylinder, which resists snapping. So check your policy wording, then tell the locksmith what it says.
